Fibre wound dressings for the management of exudated wounds

Novel approach to treating chronic wounds.

The clinical need:

Managing highly exudative chronic wounds is a major clinical and economic challenge. Current dressings often fail when saturated, fragmenting during removal and causing pain and delayed healing. The project team has developed a novel alginate fibre technology using an innovative crosslinking approach that delivers over twice the wet strength and 40% greater absorbency compared to standard alginate fibres. These properties enable intact removal and reduce patient discomfort.

Project challenge:

The project team sought help to validate the commercial potential by identifying priority clinical applications, assessing market size, and defining a clear business case for adoption in advanced wound care.

The university project team commissioned Medipex, through Place-Based Impact Accelerator (PBIAA) funding, to undertake a market intelligence review to support the project.

How did Medipex help?

We assessed the current use of alginate and CMC dressings across the UK and Europe, including their clinical performance, market size, supply landscape for exudate management, and leading manufacturers. Working with the project team, we used these findings to develop a commercialisation strategy, identifying priority commercial partners and recommending an approach for future engagement.

The information generated will be used to strengthen the university's funding application and to convince a potential collaborative partner to join them in this venture.
