Evelyn, supporting women with PMS and PMDD
Evelyn is a women’s health company focused on supporting women with Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) through science-led education, community support and evidence-informed supplements. Following Innovate UK funding, Evelyn partnered with Medipex to review competitor studies, product claims and formulations to elevate itself above competitors and increase trust among clinicians and consumers.
The clinical need:
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) affects up to 75% of women of reproductive age, with a proportion experiencing symptoms severe enough to impact daily life, wellbeing and productivity. A smaller but significant group experience Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), a more severe condition characterised by intense mood and physical symptoms across the menstrual cycle.
Despite the prevalence of PMS and PMDD, the supplement market is crowded with products making similar claims, often with limited transparency around the evidence supporting them. Many products combine multiple nutrients but provide little clarity on the rationale for ingredient selection, dosage, or interactions.
Project challenge:
Evelyn Health wanted to ensure its formulation, messaging and research strategy were grounded in robust scientific evidence.
However, understanding the competitive landscape was challenging. Many products reference ingredient-level research rather than testing their own formulations, while others provide limited detail about study design or outcomes. This made it difficult to determine how credible competitor claims were and where opportunities for differentiation existed. Evelyn therefore required a structured review of competitor studies, product claims and formulations to inform a stronger, evidence-based approach.
How did Medipex help?
Medipex conducted a structured, desk-based review of the PMS supplement landscape, analysing 18 competitor products.
This involved:
· Critically reviewing observational and clinical studies cited by competitor brands
· Assessing study design, methodology, and outcomes to determine the strength of evidence
· Mapping competitor claims against the evidence used to support them
· Reviewing formulations, including ingredient selection, dosage levels, and potential nutrient interactions
Medipex also carried out targeted research to support the development of a clinician-facing supplement guide, ensuring alignment with current scientific understanding and guidelines.
All findings were consolidated into a clear, structured report, providing an objective view of the evidence landscape.
Impact:
The analysis revealed that many competitor products rely on indirect or low-quality evidence, with limited validation of full formulations.
This gave Evelyn a clear basis to; differentiate through a more transparent, evidence-led positioning; clarify formulation decisions with stronger scientific justification; prioritise the design of robust studies to support future product claims.
As a result, Evelyn is now well positioned to continue to build a more credible, science-led product offering, strengthening trust with clinicians and consumers while standing out in a competitive women’s health market.
