DeepX Health: DermoSight Teledermatology

Systematically eliminating a structural triage crisis in skin cancer referrals

With market intelligence evaluations, regulatory structural mapping, and advanced health economic modeling, Medipex provided DeepX Health with an independent commercial roadmap for navigating the United Kingdom NHS reimbursement landscape.

The clinical need:

UK dermatology departments face unprecedented strain, receiving more urgent Two-Week Wait (2WW) suspected skin cancer referrals than any other specialty. Over 3.1 million outpatients attend annually, with half classified as urgent. Yet, formal audits reveal severe systemic inefficiencies: only 6% to 8% of urgent track referrals yield actual high-risk malignancies like melanoma or Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC). The vast majority represent benign lesions, creating severe clinical backlogs and delaying life-saving specialist care.

Project challenge:

DeepX Health developed the DermoSight Teledermoscopy Solution to systematically eliminate this structural triage crisis. DermoSight integrates a certified, dual-mode handheld medical camera—capturing both macroscopic overview and high-resolution dermatoscopic graphics—with secure Azure servers. This empowers non-specialist teams to capture and transmit robust lesion sets. Real-world data proves DermoSight safely handles 74% to 88% of cases within primary care via Advice & Guidance, shielding secondary clinics. To expand, DeepX required independent market intelligence mapping out UK frameworks and commercial pathways.

How did Medipex help?

·        NHS Clinical Landscape Mapping: Conducted an exhaustive clinical review analysing the UK dermatology landscape against the NHS Long Term Plan, Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) mandates, National Outpatient Transformation Programme (NOTP) directives, and the newly legislated 28-Day Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS).

·        National Freedom of Information (FOI) Campaign: Designed, launched, and analysed a comprehensive FOI audit across 39 Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) and 33 acute NHS Trusts. This market intelligence mapped 102 active teledermatology services, evaluated 23 independent/private competitors, identified dominant image platforms (Consultant Connect, Cinapsis, e-Derma), and tracked specific equipment profiles.

·        Contractual and Procurement Window Intelligence: Uncovered critical commercial data showing that the vast majority of active NHS teledermatology arrangements rely on short-term, rolling 1-year contracts set to expire or undergo re-tender across the 2024–2025 cycle, defining a high-priority commercial window for market entry.

·        Health Economic Cost Consequence Modeling: Partnered with M.A.R.S. Ltd (Market Access & Reimbursement Solutions) to build an advanced economic calculator. The model used real-world data from the Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS FT who are a  DermoSight deployment and mapped it against localised NHS Reference Costs, mathematically validating the cost-saving profile of avoiding non-face-to-face outpatient first appointments.

·        Strategic Commercialisation & Pilot Planning: Structured a formal business roadmap outlining actionable engagement frameworks for the newly established Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs), Cancer Alliances, and Integrated Care Systems (ICSs). Facilitated an introduction to Dr Alison Layton (Consultant Dermatologist and Associate Medical Director for Research and Development at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust) to review the product from a clinical efficacy and deployment perspective.

Impact:

Through Medipex’s rigorous market knowledge and data-driven intelligence, DeepX Health has been provided with an independently validated, highly persuasive commercial toolkit tailored for NHS commissioners. By cross-referencing real-world clinical triage data with national contract lifecycles and verified reference tariffs, the report transforms DermoSight from an innovative imaging gadget into a verified, cash-releasing service model. Medipex's strategic integration of the Innovate UK RTO framework directly accelerated DeepX Health's clinical evaluation process. Ultimately, this comprehensive market access roadmap gives NHS stakeholders absolute confidence, shortens severe local diagnostic turnaround bottlenecks, and establishes a scalable, modern model for rapid skin cancer exclusion and community-based teledermatology delivery nationwide.
